Singing nature back to life through the power of poetry, art and magic.

The Lost Words website supports a fantastic bestselling and award-winning book all about preserving our language.

We were delighted to be asked to develop the website for this amazing book. The premise is simple – the Oxford Children’s Dictionary has been removing certain words of the natural world – Dandelion, Otter, Bramble and Acorn are all gone. The Lost Words is a Penguin published book written by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated by Jackie Morris which brings back these words in a glorious fashion, and has become, as the Guardian puts it, ‘a cultural phenomenon’. This new website introduces music into the mix, bringing together numerous talented songwriters and musicians who have created songs themed around the book itself.

About the project

Armed with a copy of the book from Waterstones, we were provided with Jackie Morris’s wonderful illustrations as well as layout roughs from Penguin book designer Alison O’Toole. We then looked at ways of giving the images life through subtle animation techniques.

As with most sites we develop, this one is powered by a bespoke Content Management System allowing the production team to add and amend wording to the site in real time.

It’s been a pleasure working with the Heritage Creative team on our latest project The Lost Words-Spell Songs, they understood the brief instantly and have done an incredible job turning the artwork of Jackie Morris and the design work of Alison O’Toole into such a beautiful, clean and clear website.
